Grants for single mothers
-
Growing up in a single parent home I saw firsthand the hardship a single mother must face when striving to provide for her young children. Also having a mother who was able to benefit from grants, and other programs that were available to help her receive an education, has helped me to see the importance of programs like these.
Many women become single parents when they are just teens. Studies show that for many this has negatively affected their ability to receive a basic high school education much less go on to receive any secondary education. Immediately these young single mothers are force into a position where they now have to work to provide just the basics’ for themselves and their families. Because of not having a education, many single mothers have to at times accept work with low salaries, and with little or no benefits. Because of this situation many single mothers end up in a situation where the cost of going to college to receive more education seems out of reach.
Another common scenario is a woman becoming a single parent because of divorce, abandonment or through the death of a mate. In this scenario some newly single parent’s mothers, find that they are overnight left with the heavy responsibility of providing financially for their children. Many may have either given up careers or the opportunity in the past to pursue higher learning. It could also be the case that some of these women have left the work field for some time, so the skills they learned in collage or through their work experience are no longer applicable. These women face the same challenges as their younger counterparts, in that they now have to find work and may only be able to do so at places that are low paying. For this group to the cost of going to college, coupled with the responsibility of providing for a family, may make attending college out of their reach.
Faced with the daunting challenge of providing for their children on their own some women have turned to the government to receive assistance in the form of welfare, and other like programs. While these programs provide a measure of temporary relief, it is in the best interest of all concerned if single mothers can be put into a position to be able to care for themselves. Grants that provide single mothers the opportunity to have their college tuition paid for do just that.
