I received federal Pell grants to get me through college. They’re based on your individual income. If you aren’t married but are living with someone who is working, the financial support you receive from the person with whom you are living doesn’t count as much as if that person were your spouse. They call it “in-kind” income, if you are supported by your family or someone with whom you are cohabiting, and it won’t prevent you receiving a grant. Thus making it a great way to get through college if, like me, you’ve chosen, for whatever reason, to put off getting married.
Furthermore, Pell grants are based on your previous year’s income. So if you’re getting a two year degree, you can work in your second year and still receive your grant. This is especially nice if you’re attending a community college where the fees are relatively low. The excess left over from the grant after fees is given to the recipient as a check, in my case for over $1500. While working too, this made for a nice shopping trip and some much needed things.
Now that I’ve been out of school for a few years, and I haven’t managed to find a fulfilling careere, I’m seriously thinking of going back to school. I’ve knocked a few years off of the time it will take me to get a good degree, and I know that I can get grants to put me through at least another two years.
I highly recommend grants to anyone who can recieve them. The government has grants available for starting business, expanding businesses, going to school, and all kinds of things. You don’t have to repay the money, whether you succeed in what you’re doing or not; so there’s nothing to lose.
