Native American Grants – Housing Grants

Many times the words “affordable housing” seems almost to be a contradiction in terms, especially during periods of economic distress.  There are programs in place, though, to help subsidize the cost of housing.  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has a specific grant program to enable American Indian and Alaska Native communities develop housing for people of a low to moderate income.

The Indian Community Development Block Grant Program was created to provide funding for housing, community facilities, and economic development.  The idea is to help the Indian community as well as individual people.  Any Indian tribe, nation, group, band or Alaska native village may apply for this grant provided they have a relationship to the Federal government. 

The funding of this grant allows the Indian communities to create housing for individuals, improve or construct infrastructure (e.g.: sewers and roads), develop community buildings, and implement projects of an agricultural, commercial, or industrial nature that will enrich the particular community.
