America has always been looked upon as a ‘land of opportunities’. Since decades, outsiders from other countries have come to America and struck gold here and have settled here for generations. America has not disappointed any such person who has come to this country with dreams of making it big. It is no wonder, therefore, that all those who came here with thoughts of going back some day, continued to stay here as this country is known to wholeheartedly beckon and embrace all those who came to fulfill their ambitions and aspirations. At this juncture, I am compelled to recall a song from Johnny Wakelin, which starts like this, “America, you’ve been good to me…You changed my life…You changed my destiny…”

Minority students in America hail from different family backgrounds and requirements. Fortunately for them, there happen to be numerous college grants readily available to help all those minority students so that they are in n way deprived of college education. These grants make sure that minority population, irrespective of their class, race, background or sex, are able to make the best of every kind of educational opportunity that is available to them in the United States. These grants ease the monetary pressure associated with college education and assist the students to carve a successful path and career for themselves, in the days to come.

Students from any minority section can apply for grants, once they are able to show proof of their financial requirement for such grants. Though it is the financial condition of the student which becomes the deciding factor, even such students who have achieved academic excellence, have been exceptionally creative, possess sportsman skills or show promise, will stand to benefit from these grants.

There are also many grants that are given to the minority students directly by the federal government under the aegis of Pell Grant program, etc. They extend funds to those who are facing extreme financial difficulty and there are some awards which have been earmarked for students who belong to African American, Native American, Hispanic, Arab background, etc. Many private organizations too have come forward to assist students belonging to minority sections and those who are specializing in accounting, law, nursing, etc. at undergraduate as well as at graduate levels.

Race alone does not define the minority groups. Even those who have been disregarded or discriminated against, fall in this category. They are women, gays, lesbians, transgender ones and people suffering from disabilities like, blindness, deafness or dumbness.

Some of Minority College Grants are: 1) Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund: Grants to the extent of $6,000 to undergraduate and graduate students fighting against racism, sexism, etc. 2) Gates Millennium Scholars: Different amounts given to minority students taking up undergraduate course. 3) Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Grants in Women’s Studies: Grants worth $3,000 to female doctoral students, who take up women’s studies. 4) Aspen Institute-William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship for Minority Students: $2,500 to $5,000 to students in undergraduate and graduate levels, keen on philanthropy and non-profitable service. 5) Sons of Italy National Leadership Grants Competition: $4,000 to $25,000 for undergraduate and graduate students of Italian descent.
